FOLIC ACID is essential for the formation of normal red blood cells, maintaining the genetic code of cells, and has been proven in scientific studies to be an important factor in normal hair growth.
Nucleic acids are used in the hair follicle to form nucleoproteins, such as RNA and DNA. These Folic Acid is necessary for the formation of the nucleoproteins, which must be present for healthy hair growth.
People with severe Folic Acid deficiency will often lose all their hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes. Folic Acid deficiency can also cause the hair to turn gray. Returning to proper levels can often bring back pigmentation and natural hair color.
VITAMIN B12 works very closely with Folic Acid in red blood cell formation and in the production of nucleoproteins in hair follicles. They are combined precisely in Formula 22™ in order to achieve optimum effects.
NIACIN, sometimes called Vitamin B3, is extremely important in treating hair loss because it functions as a vasodilator. Sufficient blood flow to the papilla, bringing oxygen and nutrients, is critical to hair when it is in the anagen or “growing” stage. Follicles that do not have a proper blood flow do not produce hair. Vasodilators cause blood vessels to widen or dilate, which helps them to carry more blood and nutrients. Niacin works closely with other B vitamins, with Pantothenic Acid and with Biotin, and is combined with these ingredients in Formula 22™.
BIOTIN acts as a coenzyme in many body functions. (It helps synthesize fatty acids and amino acids.) Men and women with Biotin deficiencies frequently experience loss of hair, or loss of hair color, as a direct result of the insufficiency.
In Formula 22™ Biotin works closely with Vitamin B12, Folic Acid and Pantothenic Acid, and lessens the possibility of Zinc deficiency.
PANTOTHENIC ACID is a B vitamin which works closely with Choline in the nutrition of the follicle cells responsible for hair growth. Pantothenic Acid works by improving the body’s resistance to stress. It also builds antibodies to fight infections, as well as cell building inside the follicle. Like all the ingredients in this formula, Pantothenic Acid is combined with other B vitamins, Niacin and Biotin for optimum results.
INOSITOL AND CHOLINE are essential for rapidly growing tissues, of which hair cells are among the fastest in growth. They also affect pigmentation and hair color. Inositol and Choline in Formula 22™ are combined in correct proportions with Vitamin B12, Niacin, PABA, Biotin and Folic Acid, all of which are more effectively utilized when sufficient amounts of Inositol and Choline are present.
PABA (the abbreviation for Para-Aminobenzoic Acid) strengthens blood cells, particularly the red blood cells which carry oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. Studies have shown that it promotes hair pigmentation and reduces the effects of aging on the skin. In the Formula 22™, PABA is combined with Biotin, Pantothenic Acid and Folic Acid to provide optimum results.
IODINE is a component of the thyroid hormone thyroxin. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, reproduction, nerve and muscle function, cell use of oxygen, and the growth of skin and hair. Low thyroxin levels, known as hypothyroidism, can cause hair loss. This type of alopecia is usually characterized by thinning hair across the scalp, rather than large patches.
IRON An iron-containing molecule in each cell, called myoglobin, transports the oxygen within cells. This oxygen transportation is vitally important to all cells, but plays a special role in hair growth in the hair follicle, the hair-growth center papilla and its matrix.
SILICA OXIDE & MAGNESIUM OXIDE Silica is effective in maintaining the elasticity of artery walls (and helping to prevent atherosclerosis). Weakened or hardened blood vessels are unable to properly carry nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles, which can cause hair shafts to die off. Magnesium functions in the removal of excess toxic substances from the body, and with the synthesis of genetic material in cells. Magnesium deficiency will result in hair loss. The dietary presence of both silica and magnesium are the severely diminished when food is boiled and water treated. Both elements enhance the effectiveness of the other ingredients of Formula 22™.
COPPER is an essential trace mineral and is found in all body tissues, especially hair. Copper, along with Folic Acid, PABA and Pantothenic Acid, plays an important role in hair pigmentation and hair graying. A copper deficiency can result in poor formation of melanin, with a resulting loss of color. Copper is also necessary for the structural integrity of the hair.
The body requires a balance of copper, iron and zinc so that all three may be absorbed and utilized properly. Formula 22™ includes recommended levels of all of these.
MANGANESE, an essential trace metal, can affect hair in several ways. It is essential for the metabolism of fats, which can affect hair growth. It moderates nervous irritability, and helps reduce stress (often a factor in alopecia). It is important in the cycles of protein buildup and breakdown, and must be present in hair follicles, the papilla and matrix during hair growth.
ZINC is a component of numerous enzymes. Among its many functions, it is useful in the treatment of hair loss. Studies have shown that zinc deficiency will cause hair follicles to atrophy, as well as interfere with the formation of the amino acids necessary for normal hair growth.
Perhaps most important, research shows that zinc reduces DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This compound is the main cause of male pattern baldness, and reduction of DHT may help reverse the results of male pattern baldness.
